What is “Aum”? Do We Have to Say Aum Before Each Yoga Session?

One of questions asked most by the beginners for yoga is “why do we say aum”?

I’ve had a lot of people who had their first yoga sessions with me. I feel very lucky for that. What I realize that the majority of them hesitate to say “aum” while we say it at the beginning and end of each session. I don’t, can’t and won’t force anyone to say it unless they want it. However, I highly suggest trying it at least once.

I know that at first it sounds very religious which is why most of us reject to practise it. To me, Aum is mostly a sound/vibration I create, we create to tell our body and mind that a yoga session is about to start or end. It works like a bell ring when your class starts or ends at school. However, you will realize it is a little more than that when you try and realize the vibration in your body and feel united with your class and actually everyone in the world. It is just a reminder to mark that “one is all and all is one”.

For me saying aum was like singing and I don’t feel comfortable singing in front of anyone as my voice is awful. However, when I start to say aum comfortably in front of others, I realized I can express myself better too. Are you ready to give it a try?
